The Chicago Area Writing Project (CAWP) is primarily a teachers professional development organization and network. However, we are able to offer student programs on occasion.
- Scholastic Writing Awards – For the past eight years, CAWP has been the Chicago Regional Affiliate for the writing portion of this prestigious program. Students in grades 7-12 are invited to submit their writing to us between September and December, and we select local winners in January who are invited to our award ceremony in March. In 2016-2017, over 331,000 entries of art and writing were submitted nationally. Go to www.artandwriting.org to find out about scholarships. Check our website for writing categories and directions for submissions.
- Youth Writing Camps For the past ten years, CAWP has offered either a two-week or three-week writing camp held on the UIC campus and designed for any young writers entering grades 7-10 who likes to write. In the last three years, we have received funding which allows us to sponsor student writing camps in the schools of some of our CAWP Teacher Consultants. In the summer of 2017, we are only planning school-based youth writing camps. However, please email us during the 2017-2018 school year at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are a parent and would be interested in a 2018 summer camp at UIC. if there is enough demand, we definitely will reconsider it for next summer.
- Specialized Writing Student Workshops – Because we have such talented K-College teachers and are affiliated with national organizations that promote good writing, occasion, we are able to offer specialized programs such as “Dymystifying the College Application Essay” or “Creating Political Cartoons.” Check back to see what’s available!
