FOR STUDENTS:

2019 Scholastic Writing Program

For the 10th year, the Chicago Area Writing Project will serve as the Chicago area  writing affiliate for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  Student writers in grades 7-12 are invited to participate in this prestigious writing program established in 1923 in which the early talents artist/ writers such as Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Sylvia Plath and others were recognized when they also were teenagers.

Last year, students submitted nearly 350,000 works of visual art and writing to the Scholastic Awards; more than 90,000 works were recognized at the regional level and celebrated in local exhibitions and ceremonies.

As the program in Chicago continues to grow, we are excited to announce we will co-host this year’s program with Writopia Lab Chicago   which offers a wide variety of writing workshops and programs led by professional writers for teens and adults.

Student authors in grades 7-12 are invited to submit their works in the following genres: flash fiction, short stories, poetry, drama, journalism, humor, science fiction/ fantasy, memoir, and critical essays.  If you’d like to start thinking about next year’s program, click here to see  Scholastic 2019 Writing Categories and Preparation Directions – Chicago Region .  Registration opens Sept. 12, 2018.
